Journal of General Virology is a peer-reviewed virology journal that has been publishing research for more than 50 years. Its scope covers all aspects of animal, plant, insect, bacterial and fungal viruses, transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, molecular biology and immunology, virus–host interactions and antiviral compounds, and it collaborates with partners such as the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses to support the global virology community.

Research Article

Cover Letter Personal communications or unpublished results cited in the manuscript must be confirmed in a cover letter.
Abstract An abstract is required.
Manuscript Research Articles should be 3000–7000 words. Manuscript should include an Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, with Results and Discussion allowed to be combined if appropriate. Title page must include the title, author list with affiliations, corresponding author’s email address, abstract, keywords, and any new sequence accession numbers, and the manuscript must include between three and six keywords plus funding and conflict of interest statements.
References References may be submitted in any consistent style, although the house style is Vancouver. Reference list should include author names, source title, year, volume and issue where appropriate, page numbers, DOIs where possible, and access dates for websites.
Figures & Tables Figures must be uploaded as separate files, while tables are cited sequentially in the text. Figures and tables must be cited sequentially in the text, be broadly comprehensible without the main text, and define any abbreviations or icons in the legend.

Manuscript Review manuscripts should be 5000–10,000 words. Review manuscripts should be structured as agreed with the Reviews Editor or Editors-in-Chief. The title page must include an abstract and three to six keywords, and the manuscript must contain funding and conflict of interest statements.
