Southern African Journal of HIV Medicine is focused on HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention and related topics relevant to clinical and public health practice. The purpose of the journal is to disseminate original research results and support high-level learning related to HIV Medicine. It publishes original research articles, editorials, case reports/case series, reviews of state-of-the-art clinical practice and correspondence.

Original Research Article

Cover Letter A compulsory cover letter must be submitted together with the Authorship, Disclosure Statements, Copyright, and License Agreement Form as a supplementary file. The cover letter must be completed in full and include the required authorship, disclosure, copyright, and license agreement information.
Abstract An abstract is required for Original Research Articles. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Objectives, Method, Results, and Conclusion.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 5000 words excluding the abstract, tables, figures, graphs, and references. Main text must use the headings Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. Manuscript must include eight keywords, a 'What this study adds' section of no more than 50 words, an 'Ethical considerations' subsection within Methods, AI-use disclosure where applicable, and headings for Competing interests, Author contributions, Funding, Data availability, and Disclaimer.
References Reference list must include no more than 60 references. References must follow Vancouver style. Reference lists must include accurate DOIs where applicable.
Figures & Tables Submissions must include no more than 7 tables, figures, and graphs combined. Illustrations must adhere to the AOSIS House style guide illustration requirements.

Review Article

Cover Letter A compulsory cover letter and the Authorship, Disclosure Statements, Copyright, and License Agreement form must be submitted with the manuscript. The cover letter must be completed in full, and author contribution disclosures are required through the Authorship, Disclosure Statements, Copyright, and License Agreement form.
Abstract An abstract is required for Review Articles. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. Narrative review abstracts must be unstructured, while systematic review or meta-analysis abstracts must be structured. Systematic review or meta-analysis abstracts must use the headings Background, Objectives, Method, Results and Conclusion.
Manuscript The manuscript must not exceed 5000 words excluding the abstract, tables, figures, graphs, and references. Systematic review or meta-analysis main text must use structural headings. The manuscript must include eight keywords, disclose any use of AI-assisted technology, include statements under Competing interests, Author contributions, Funding information, Data availability statement, and Disclaimer, and systematic reviews or meta-analyses must include a 'What this study adds' section of no more than 50 words.

Case Report

Cover Letter A compulsory cover letter and the Authorship, Disclosure Statements, Copyright, and License Agreement Form must be submitted with the case report. The cover letter must be completed in full, and all contributions must be disclosed in the Authorship, Disclosure Statements, Copyright, and License Agreement Form.
Abstract An abstract is required for case reports. The abstract must not exceed 50 words. The abstract can be structured. Permitted abstract labels are Introduction, Patient presentation, Management and outcome, and Conclusion.
Manuscript The manuscript must not exceed 1000 words excluding the abstract, tables, figures, graphs, and references. The manuscript should use clear subheadings and must include sections for What this study adds and Ethical considerations. The manuscript must include a 'What this study adds' section of no more than 50 words, eight keywords, CRediT author contribution statements, AI-use disclosure where applicable, and headings for Competing interests, Author contributions, Funding, Data availability, and Disclaimer.
References The submission must include no more than 5 references. References must follow Vancouver style. Reference lists must include accurate DOIs where applicable.

Eight keywords separated by semicolons, statements under the subheadings Competing interests, Author contributions, Funding information, Data availability statement, and Disclaimer, and disclosure of any AI-assisted technology use in the manuscript are required.
References Reference lists must contain no more than 15 references. References must follow the Vancouver referencing style. Reference lists must include accurate DOIs where applicable.
Figures & Tables Clinical Images submissions may include no more than 4 tables, figures, and graphs combined. A high-quality image must be submitted, and if more than 1 panel is included, both an original image and a labelled-panel version must be provided.
