Submission Instructions

Journal of Molecular Diagnostics accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Regular Article

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must disclose conflicts of interest and affirm that all authors and acknowledged contributors have read and approved the manuscript.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 220 words. Abstract must be unstructured. Abstract should summarize the background, methodology, results, and significance of the study without using formal headings.
Manuscript There are no official limits to word count. Text should include Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion in that order. If AI or AI-assisted technologies were used in writing, the manuscript must include a section titled Declaration of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, and if AI or AI-assisted tools were used in the research design or methods, that use must be described reproducibly in the Methods section.
References References must be numbered in order of citation, consistent with Vancouver-style numbering. References must list all authors and be numbered according to first citation in the text, tables, and figure legends, using DOI when available.
Figures & Tables There are no official limits to the number of tables and figures. Figures and tables may be embedded in the main text file or provided separately for initial submission, but tables should be submitted after the main text on separate pages as part of the manuscript. Figure legends must be included in the manuscript separately from figure files, and tables must be text-only without figures or shading.

Technical Advance

Cover Letter Cover letter is required at submission. Cover letter must disclose conflicts of interest and affirm that all authors and acknowledged contributors have read and approved the manuscript.
Abstract Abstract is required on a separate page. Abstract must not exceed 220 words. Abstract must be unstructured. Abstract should summarize the background, methodology, results, and significance of the study.
Manuscript There are no official word count limits. Manuscript should include Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion, and Technical Advances should include a detailed description of the methodological design and discussion of how the technique improves molecular diagnostics practice. If AI or AI-assisted technologies were used in the writing process, the manuscript must include a Declaration of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process identifying the tool or service used, the reason for its use, and that the authors reviewed and edited the content and take full responsibility for it.
References References must be numbered in order of citation in the text. Complete author citation is required, references should begin on a new page, and DOI should be used when available.
Figures & Tables There are no official limits to the number of tables and figures. Figures and tables may be embedded in the main text file or provided separately for initial submission, but tables should be submitted after the main text on separate pages as part of the manuscript and figure legends should be included in the manuscript separately from the figure files. Tables must be black-and-white text only and figures must have legible labels with related panels arranged on a single page.

Review

Cover Letter A cover letter is required, and Review proposals must receive prior approval from the Editor-in-Chief with the author's curriculum vitae and an outline of the proposed article. The cover letter must disclose conflicts of interest, confirm that all authors and acknowledged contributors approved the manuscript, and affirm permission from named individuals in the Acknowledgments or cited as personal communications or unpublished data.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 220 words. Abstract must be unstructured because structured abstracts are not permitted.
Manuscript Review manuscripts must not exceed 5,000 words. The text should include Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion in that order. Reviews may include one mechanistic image, Key Points may be provided as 3 or 4 bulleted highlights, and any use of AI or AI-assisted technologies in writing must be disclosed in a Declaration of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process.
References Reviews must not include more than 100 references. References must be numbered in order of citation, consistent with a Vancouver-style system. References must list all authors, begin on a new page, and use DOIs when available.
Figures & Tables Reviews may include no more than 4 total figures and tables, including supplemental data. Figures and tables may be embedded in the main text file or provided separately for initial submission, and tables should be submitted after the main text on separate pages as part of the manuscript. Figure legends must be provided in a list within the manuscript separate from the figure files, and tables must be text-only without figures or shading.

Mini-Review

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must disclose conflicts of interest, affirm that all authors and acknowledged contributors approved the manuscript, and confirm permission from individuals named in the Acknowledgments or cited as personal communications or unpublished data.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 220 words. The abstract must be unstructured.
Manuscript Mini-Reviews must not exceed 3,000 words. Mini-Reviews should include one mechanistic image. A Declaration of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process must be included if AI or AI-assisted writing tools were used, and Key Points may include 3 or 4 bulleted highlights if included.
References Mini-Reviews may include a maximum of 50 references. References must be numbered in order of citation and include complete author citation, with DOI used when available.
Figures & Tables Mini-Reviews may include a maximum of 2 total figures and tables, including supplemental data. Figures and tables may be embedded in the main text file or provided separately for initial submission, and tables should be submitted after the main text on separate pages as part of the manuscript. Figure legends must be submitted as a list within the manuscript separate from figure files, and tables must be text-only rather than submitted as figure files.
