The Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport publishes practically and clinically meaningful studies in sports medicine and sports science, including sport and exercise medicine, sport injury, exercise therapy, physical activity and public health relevant to sport and exercise, and sports science fields such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor control and learning, sport and exercise psychology, and sports nutrition. Animal studies are not considered, and interdisciplinary and qualitative studies with specific applications to sport, exercise, and health are also considered.

Original Research

Cover Letter A cover letter is required and the corresponding author must also state in it if the paper is already available on a preprint server and include the link. The cover letter must state the sub-discipline, disclose sources of outside support and the funder’s role, include applicable commercial relationship disclosures, and state if the paper is on a preprint server with its link.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Original Research articles. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Objectives, Design, Method, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Original Research articles must not exceed 5000 words excluding title, abstract, tables/figures, figure legends, acknowledgements, and references. The main text must be organized as Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, optional Practical Implications, Acknowledgments, References, Tables, and Figure Legends, and the methods section must not be titled 'Materials and Methods'. An Acknowledgments section is compulsory, Practical Implications may be included as 3 to 5 bulleted lay-language points without recommendations for further research, up to 6 keywords must be provided, and any use of generative AI in writing must be declared in a dedicated section before the references.
References Original Research articles may include a maximum of 40 references. References, illustrations, and tables must be cited in numeric order by order of mention in the text. Reference formatting may be in any consistent style at submission, with all authors listed when there are three or fewer and the first three followed by 'et al' when there are more than three.
Figures & Tables Original Research articles may include a maximum combined total of 6 tables and figures. Tables may be submitted at the end of the text file on separate pages with one table per page, figure legends must be included in the text file, and long tables should be provided only as supplementary material. Tables must be submitted as editable text rather than images and should not duplicate material presented elsewhere in the manuscript.
