Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must specify the manuscript type, include ethical issue and conflict-of-interest statements, provide complete corresponding author contact information, state that all authors have read and approved the manuscript, and disclose redundant or duplicate material.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Background and Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Original Articles are recommended to be no longer than 5,500 words including abstract, tables, figure legends, and references. The manuscript must be organized in the order cover page, abstract, key words, introduction, methods, results, discussion, references, and captions and legends for tables and figures, with main text subheadings Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions. Include 3 to 6 keywords and report sex and gender appropriately, including participant or animal/cell sex and/or gender and methods used to determine sex and gender, with justification required for single-sex populations unless obvious.
References References must conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. References must be numbered with unparenthesized superscript numbers in the text, listed in order of first citation, list all authors when there are 6 or fewer, and list the first 6 followed by et al. when there are 7 or more.
Figures & Tables A maximum total of 7 figures or tables is permitted. Figures must be submitted as separate files and not embedded in the manuscript, while figure legends must appear on a separate page at the end of the manuscript file. Tables must be provided as Word tables on separate pages with titles and numbered in citation order.

Reviews

Abstract An abstract is required for Reviews. The abstract for Reviews must be unstructured.
Manuscript Reviews are recommended to be approximately 6,000 words including the abstract, tables, figure legends, and references. The manuscript should be arranged as title and author information, abstract, text, acknowledgments and sources of funding, conflict-of-interest disclosures, references, figure legends, and tables. The manuscript must include 3 to 6 keywords at the end of the abstract page and a conflict-of-interest statement within the manuscript.
References References must conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. References must be cited with unparenthesized superscript numbers and listed on a separate page in the order first cited, listing all authors when there are 6 or fewer and the first 6 followed by "et al." when there are 7 or more.
