Article

Cover Letter A cover letter is required with the submission. The cover letter must include the corresponding author's affiliation and contact information.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 150 words. Abstract must be unstructured and contain no subheadings.
Manuscript Manuscript must include an Introduction without subheadings, Results with subheadings, a Discussion without subheadings or separate limitations or conclusions sections, and a Methods section with subheadings, with all Methods reported in the main manuscript file. The manuscript must include Data availability, Author contributions, and Competing Interests sections, and must document any use of a large language model in the Methods section or another suitable section if no Methods section is available.
References References are limited to 60. References must use Nature referencing style. References must be numbered sequentially in order of appearance, list all authors unless there are more than five authors in which case only the first author followed by 'et al.' should be given, and include only one publication per reference number.
Figures & Tables At initial submission, figures should be incorporated into the main article file, while tables must be submitted at the end of the text document and figure legends must be placed in the main manuscript after the references. Figure legends must be no more than 350 words per figure, and multi-panel figures must be presented as a single page or file with panels labeled a), b), c).

Manuscript Main text should be 1,000-1,500 words excluding the abstract, methods, references, and figure legends. Main text must not contain subheadings, while the Methods section should use subheadings and all Methods must appear in the main manuscript file. A Data availability section and an Author contributions statement are mandatory, a Code availability section should be included where applicable, competing interests must be declared, funding should be declared in the Acknowledgments, and use of a large language model must be documented in the Methods section or a suitable alternative section.
References Brief Communications should include around 20 references. References must use Nature style. References must be numbered sequentially in order of appearance, use one publication per reference number, and list all authors unless there are more than five, in which case the first author should be followed by 'et al.'.
Figures & Tables At initial submission, figures should be incorporated into the main article file and tables should be placed at the end of the text document, while for final submission each complete figure must be uploaded as a separate file. Figure legends are limited to 350 words per figure, and multi-panel figures must be presented as a single file on one page with panels labeled a), b), c), and so on.

Matters Arising

Cover Letter A cover letter must accompany the submission. The cover letter must include the corresponding author's affiliation and contact information and indicate if attempts to contact the original authors were unsuccessful.
Abstract An abstract is required and is provided by the opening summary paragraph. The abstract must not exceed 70 words. The abstract must be unstructured.
Manuscript The main text must not exceed 1,200 words. The contribution must begin with a brief non-specialist summary paragraph that serves as the abstract for submission purposes. An Author contributions statement naming all authors by initials, a Competing Interests statement for each author, and disclosure of large language model use in the manuscript are required.
References The contribution may include up to 15 references. References must use Nature article style. The original research article under discussion must be the first citation, references must be numbered sequentially, and all authors should be listed unless there are more than five, in which case the first author is followed by 'et al.'.
Figures & Tables The article should ideally require only one or two small figures or tables. At submission, figures should be included in the main article file and supplied separately if they cannot be shown clearly there. Figure legends are limited to 350 words per figure, multi-panel figures must be presented on a single page, and panels must be labeled a), b), c).
