Original Contributions

Cover Letter A cover letter must be uploaded. The cover letter must state that all authors have read and approved the submitted manuscript and that the manuscript has not been submitted or published elsewhere except as an abstract if relevant.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 300 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 5,000 words excluding the title page, structured abstract, references, tables, and figure legends. Include 1 to 8 key words after the abstract, and relevant completed technical review checklists using manuscript line numbers must be supplied.
References References must not exceed 50.
Figures & Tables The combined total number of figures and tables must not exceed 6, and each figure may contain up to 6 panels. Initial Original Contributions submissions must include all submission files necessary for review, and for initial review each figure and its legend should be presented together on its own page within the manuscript PDF. Tables must be provided as editable text rather than images.

Reviews

Cover Letter A cover letter must be uploaded with the submission. The cover letter must state that all authors have read and approved the manuscript and that the manuscript has not been submitted or published elsewhere except as an abstract if relevant.
Abstract An abstract is required for Reviews. The abstract counts within the 8,000-word limit for Reviews, but no separate abstract word or character limit is stated. The abstract for Reviews must be unstructured.
Manuscript Reviews must not exceed 8,000 words including the title page, unstructured abstract, text, acknowledgments, sources of funding, disclosures, references, figure legends, tables, and appendices intended for publication in the main article. Reviews must include a key figure in JPG format summarizing the take-home message visually, and a 50-100 word legend for the key figure is optional.
References References requirements are not specified.
Figures & Tables The combined total number of figures and tables for Reviews is limited to 6, and each figure may contain up to 6 panels. For initial review, each figure and its corresponding legend should be presented together on its own page within the manuscript PDF. If a manuscript figure is used as the key figure, both a JPG with embedded text and an EPS, PDF, or TIFF version without the embedded legend must be provided.
