Research Article

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must explain why the manuscript should be published in BMC Cancer, note any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors approved submission, confirm the content has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and name the special issue if applicable.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 350 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must include the headings Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions, and articles reporting health care interventions on human participants must also include a Trial registration section with the registration number and date, adding 'retrospectively registered' when applicable.
Manuscript Manuscript must include a title page identifying all authors and the corresponding author, and the main text must include Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, a Declarations section, and a list of three to ten keywords. Manuscript must include a Declarations section with the subheadings Ethics approval and consent to participate, Consent for publication, Availability of data and materials, Competing interests, Funding, Authors' contributions, and Acknowledgements, with Authors' information optional, and any non-relevant declaration section must still appear and state 'Not applicable'.
References References must use Vancouver style. Only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, abstracts, and publicly available preprints may be cited; unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list; journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE; and web links must be numbered and listed in full with site title, URL, and access date.
Figures & Tables Figure titles and legends must be provided in the main manuscript while figures are uploaded separately, and tables shorter than one page may be placed within the manuscript whereas longer tables may be placed at the end of the text file. Figures must be numbered in text order and multi-panel figures submitted as a single composite file, while tables must be numbered sequentially, created with the word processor's table function rather than embedded as figures or spreadsheets, and manuscripts with cropped gels or blots must provide clearly marked uncropped full-length versions together in one supplementary figure with legends noting their availability.

References References must follow Vancouver reference style. References must not be cited in the abstract, only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, abstracts, or publicly available preprints may be cited, unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list, journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE, web links must be numbered and included in the reference list with full site title, URL, and access date, and publicly available datasets relied on by the paper must be cited with a persistent identifier such as a DOI.
Figures & Tables Tables shorter than one page may be placed in the manuscript text, tables longer than one page may be placed at the end of the document with placement indicated in the text, figure titles and legends must appear in the main manuscript rather than in the graphic file, and figures must be uploaded separately in the order cited. Multi-panel figures must be submitted as a single composite file, tables must not be embedded as figures or spreadsheet files, footnotes must not contain figures or tables, and table footnotes must use superscript lower-case letters or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data.
