BMC Medicine is an invitation-only journal. Submissions are accepted by invitation from the editorial board only. The following article types are accepted:
Research Articles
Cover Letter
Cover letter is required. Cover letter must explain any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors approved submission, confirm the manuscript has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and name the special issue if applicable.
Abstract
Abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 350 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must include the headings Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions, and Trial registration.
Manuscript
Manuscript must include Background, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, and a Declarations section with the subsections Ethics approval and consent to participate, Consent for publication, Availability of data and materials, Competing interests, Funding, Authors' contributions, Acknowledgements, and optional Authors' information, using 'Not applicable' where a declarations subsection is not relevant. Manuscript must include three to ten keywords, a list of abbreviations if abbreviations are used, and documentation of any Large Language Model use in the Methods section or a suitable alternative part.
References
References must use Vancouver style. Only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, abstracts, and publicly available preprints may be cited, unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list, journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE, and web links must be numbered and included in full in the reference list with site title, URL, and access date.
Figures & Tables
Tables shorter than one page may be placed within the manuscript, longer tables may be placed at the end of the text file, oversized tables may be uploaded separately, figure titles and legends must appear in the main manuscript, and figures must be uploaded separately in the order first cited. Figures and tables must be numbered in citation order, multi-panel figures submitted as a single composite file, table titles placed above tables, table legends placed below tables, and tables created with the word processor's table function rather than embedded as figures or spreadsheet files.

The cover letter must explain any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors approved the manuscript for submission, confirm the manuscript has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and name the special issue if applicable.
Abstract
Reviews must include an abstract. The abstract must be no more than 350 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must include Background, Main body, and short Conclusion headings.
Manuscript
Reviews should be approximately 3000 words. The manuscript must include Background, Main text, Conclusions, and a Declarations section. Reviews must include three to ten keywords, an Availability of data and materials statement, Declarations headings for Ethics approval and consent to participate, Consent for publication, Availability of data and materials, Competing interests, Funding, Authors' contributions, and Acknowledgements marked 'Not applicable' when irrelevant, and any Large Language Model use must be documented in the Methods section or another suitable section if no Methods section is available.
References
References must follow Vancouver style. Only published articles, clinical trial registration records, and abstracts that are published, in press, or publicly available as e-prints/preprints may be cited, unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list, web links and URLs must be numbered and included in the reference list, and journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE.

Manuscript must include an Availability of data and materials statement, and clinical trial Registered Reports must include a SPIRIT figure in the main text and a SPIRIT checklist as an additional file, both referenced in the text.
References
References must follow Vancouver style. Only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, abstracts, and publicly available preprints may be cited; unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list; journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE; web links and URLs must be numbered and included in the reference list; and publicly available datasets should be cited with persistent identifiers expressed as full URLs.

SPIRIT figures for clinical trial Registered Reports must be included in the main body of the text, tables under one page may be placed within the manuscript while larger tables may be placed at the end or uploaded as additional files, and figure titles and legends must appear in the main manuscript rather than in the graphic file.
