Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation is an open access, peer-reviewed medical/scientific journal dedicated to publishing original research, reviews, and communications related to COPD. Following peer review and editorial acceptance, manuscripts are published online as quickly as possible as Articles in Press. Accepted manuscripts are aggregated into journal issues 6 times per year in January, March, May, July, September, and November and are available at no charge without a required subscription fee. The journal is indexed by PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus and Web of Science.

Original Research

Cover Letter A cover letter is required only for Phase 1 trial submissions. Phase 1 trial submissions must include justification for consideration based on novelty, innovation, or other unique factors in the cover letter.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. The abstract must be 250 words or less. The abstract must be structured.
Manuscript The manuscript must not exceed 4,500 words excluding references. The manuscript must include the research question or hypothesis, research methods used including detailed statistical methods and analysis and relevant approvals, detailed results, a robust discussion of the results, acknowledgements, a data sharing statement, declaration of interests, and references. The manuscript must include keywords, an Author Contributions paragraph in the Acknowledgements section, a Declaration of Interest section, and a data sharing statement.
References The manuscript must contain no more than 50 references. References must be formatted in American Medical Association style. References must be numbered in the order they appear in the text, journal article references with more than six authors must list the first three followed by et al., and journal titles must use National Library of Medicine abbreviations.
Figures & Tables The manuscript may include a maximum of 6 figures and 6 tables. Figures must be submitted as separate files and not embedded in the text, and tables must be grouped on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. Tables may not exceed 10 Word pages in length.

Abstract An abstract is required for Reviews and must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be 250 words or fewer. Narrative Reviews require an unstructured abstract, while Systematic Reviews require a structured abstract.
Manuscript Reviews must not exceed 5,000 words excluding references. Systematic Reviews must include the methods used to locate, select, and incorporate the information provided in the review. Manuscripts must include keywords, an Author Contributions paragraph in the Acknowledgements, and a Declaration of Interest section.
References Reviews may include no more than 125 references. References must follow American Medical Association style. References must be numbered in the order of appearance, journal titles must use National Library of Medicine abbreviations, and references with more than six authors must list the first three followed by et al.
Figures & Tables Reviews may include a maximum of 6 figures and 6 tables. Figures must be submitted as separate files and not embedded in the text, and tables must be grouped on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. Review tables must not exceed 10 Word pages in length.

Brief Report

Abstract An abstract is optional for a Brief Report. If provided, the abstract must be 150–200 words. If provided, the abstract must be unstructured.
Manuscript The manuscript must be 1,500 words or less, excluding references.
