Genes is a peer-reviewed, open access journal of genetics and genomics published monthly online by MDPI. The Spanish Society for Nitrogen Fixation (SEFIN) is affiliated with the journal, and members receive discounts on article processing charges. Feature Papers

Cover Letter A cover letter is required with the submission. The cover letter must explain the paper’s significance, place the findings in the context of existing work, explain the manuscript’s fit to the journal scope, and include statements that the work is not under consideration or published elsewhere and that all authors approved the manuscript and agree to submission to Genes.

Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract can be up to 200 words long. The abstract should follow a structured IMRAD-style format without headings.

Manuscript Feature Papers must be substantial original articles, and manuscripts must contain the sections Author Information, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Conclusions, Figures and Tables with Captions, Funding Information, Author Contributions, and Conflict of Interest. The manuscript must include three to ten keywords after the abstract and must document any use of AI tools or large language models in the Methods section or another suitable part of the manuscript.

References References may be submitted in any citation style as long as the formatting is consistent throughout. References must be numbered in order of appearance, listed individually at the end of the manuscript, include the full title, and place in-text citation numbers in square brackets before punctuation.

Figures & Tables Graphics in Microsoft Word manuscripts should be inserted in the main text after the paragraph of first citation. Figures, schemes, and tables must be numbered in order of appearance and all figures, schemes, and tables must have a short explanatory title and caption.
