Original Manuscripts

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must state whose idea the study was if it did not originate with the senior or corresponding authors and must provide details of any author financial incentives or honoraria.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Background & Aims, Approach & Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript The manuscript must be no longer than 6,000 words including references but excluding the title page, abstract, figure legends, and tables. The manuscript must include all relevant portions of the Methods section and all references in the main manuscript. The manuscript must include 5-7 keywords, an alphabetical abbreviations list, and AI use disclosures in the Materials and Methods or similar section when applicable.
References References must conform to AMA Manual of Style. References must be cited in consecutive numerical order by superscript Arabic numerals, list all authors if there are 6 or fewer or the first 3 followed by et al if there are more than 6, and papers not yet accepted must be cited only in the text.
Figures & Tables The manuscript must contain no more than 8 figures and tables in total, and each figure may contain a maximum of 6 panels. Tables and figures must not be embedded in the manuscript file and must be uploaded separately, with figure legends grouped on a separate page after the references. A graphical abstract should accompany the article and standard graphical abstracts must use the provided template, clearly state the study question or purpose and research design, and limit the Key Question to 15 words and the body to 30 words.

Review Articles

Cover Letter If the manuscript idea originated with someone other than the senior or corresponding authors or if any author received financial incentives or honoraria for manuscript work, the cover letter must identify the originator and provide those payment details.
Abstract Abstract must not exceed 250 words.
Manuscript Review Articles should be no longer than 9,000 words excluding references. Review Articles must include 3 to 6 key points, 5-7 keywords, an alphabetical list of abbreviations, and an AI disclosure in the Materials and Methods or similar section if AI tools were used.
References The reference list for Review Articles need not be exhaustive. References must conform to AMA Manual of Style. References must be cited by superscript Arabic numerals in consecutive order, list all authors if there are 6 or fewer or the first 3 followed by et al. if there are more than 6, and give journal abbreviations in PubMed style.
Figures & Tables Tables and figures must not be embedded in the manuscript file, with each table uploaded individually and each figure uploaded as a separate file, while figure legends must appear together on a separate page after the references. Tables must be text-only and figures must be cited in numerical order using Arabic numerals.

The manuscript must contain elements needed to fully assess causality and must disclose in the Materials and Methods or similar section how any AI tool was used and which tool was used.
References The manuscript may include a maximum of 5 references. References must conform to AMA style. References must be cited in the text in consecutive numerical order using superscript Arabic numerals, list all authors when there are 6 or fewer, list the first 3 followed by et al when there are more than 6, and exclude unpublished or unaccepted works from the reference list.
Figures & Tables The manuscript may include a maximum of two figures or tables. Tables and figures must not be embedded in the manuscript file and must be uploaded separately, with figure legends provided in a section after the text. Tables must be text-only and submitted on separate pages, and all abbreviations or symbols in figures and tables must be defined in the corresponding legends or footnotes.
