Research

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must explain the prior background, the conceptual advance, the significance and potential impact of the work, and state if the paper is part of a consortium.
Abstract A summary is required. Summary must be a single paragraph of no more than 150 words. Summary must be unstructured as a single paragraph. Summary should include the background or purpose, principal results, approaches or model systems, major conclusions, and broader significance without reference citations.
Manuscript Research articles must be under 7,000 words including spaces and main figure legends but excluding STAR Methods text, supplemental item legends, and the references section. Manuscript should include Title, Author list, Author affiliations and footnotes, Contact information, Summary, Keywords, Introduction, Results, Limitations of the study, Discussion, Resource availability, Acknowledgments, Author contributions, Declaration of interests, Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies, Supplemental information titles and legends, Figure and or scheme titles and legends, Tables, STAR Methods, Resource identification initiative, and References in that order. Up to 10 keywords may follow the summary, the manuscript must include a Resource Availability section with the subsections Lead Contact, Materials Availability, and Data and Code Availability, a dedicated Author Contributions section immediately after Acknowledgments, a Declaration of Interests section, and a generative AI declaration section only if AI-assisted writing was used.
References References must use numbered superscript citations. References must be numbered sequentially by first citation, include only one article per reference entry, and use "et al." only after 10 author names.
Figures & Tables Research articles may contain no more than seven main figures and or tables unless discussed with the editors. Main-text figures or schemes must be uploaded as separate files with titles and legends in a single Figures section of the manuscript, while main-text tables should appear at the end of the manuscript after the figure or scheme legends. Figures and tables must be cited in numerical order in the main text, figures must include descriptive titles and legends, and tables must be editable, titled, and not divided into panels.

Figures & Tables Reports may contain up to 4 display items and no more than 4 supplemental figures, with tables and or movies allowed for a total of up to 8 supplemental items. Main-text figures must be uploaded as separate files with titles and legends in a single figures section of the manuscript, while main-text tables must appear at the end of the manuscript after the figure legends. Figures must be cited in numerical order and include a brief descriptive title and legend, and tables must be editable, numbered consecutively, include a descriptive title, and not be divided into panels.
