Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience

The Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience investigates brain-behavior interactions and promotes a lively interchange among the mind sciences. Contributions address both descriptions of function and underlying brain events and reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the field, covering developments in neuroscience, neuropsychology, and cognitive psychology.

Submission Instructions

Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Empirical And Methodological

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract Abstract is required. Abstract must be 251 words. Abstract must be unstructured and written in complete sentences without subheadings. Abstract must clearly state the relevance of the article to fields outside of the subdiscipline being reported.
Manuscript There is no page limit for submitted manuscripts, and the Introduction must be 651 words and the Discussion 1501 words. Manuscript must include an Introduction presenting the background, objectives, and hypothesis, a Methods section, and a References section placed last, and the Results and Discussion may be combined. Manuscript must clearly state the theoretical contribution to cognitive neuroscience, document autonomous or semi-autonomous AI research task use in the Methods section with the tool, model, and purpose, include a data availability statement at the end of the Discussion, then an Author contribution section, followed by Acknowledgments and Funding Information.
References References must follow American Psychological Association format. References must include a Crossref DOI formatted as a full https://doi.org URL.
Figures & Tables A maximum of 7 figures is permitted. For initial submission, figures may be pasted into the manuscript file. Supplemental materials are permitted but must be included with the materials submitted for peer review.

Preregistered Research Reports (Prr)

Cover Letter A cover letter is required for both Stage 1 and Stage 2 submissions. Stage 1 cover letters must confirm support, approvals, resources, startup timing, repository name and URL, timeline, data-sharing plan, and consent to publication of the abstract if the submission is withdrawn after in-principle acceptance, while Stage 2 cover letters must confirm no reported data were collected before in-principle acceptance and specify changes to the Abstract, Introduction, and Methods plus page numbers for archived proposal, data/materials, and code URLs.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must be 251 words. The abstract is unstructured. For Stage 1, the abstract must describe the predicted pattern of results and the theoretical implications.
Manuscript The Introduction must be 651 words and the Discussion must be 1501 words. Stage 1 submissions must include the Abstract, Introduction, and Methods, Results and Discussion may be combined, the Stage 1 introduction must end with an explicit enumerated list of concise hypotheses stated in terms of concrete independent and dependent variables, and the Stage 2 Results and Discussion must be organized around the hypotheses and planned analyses. The Methods section must include an explicit a priori justification of statistical power, sample size justification and effect sizes are required, AI agent use for research tasks must be documented in the Methods section with the tool, underlying model, and general logic and purpose, and supplemental materials are permitted if included for peer review.
References References must follow APA style. References must include a Crossref DOI when available in URL format.
Figures & Tables A maximum of 7 figures is permitted. For initial submissions, figures may be pasted into the manuscript file.

Review

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract Abstract requirements are not specified.
Manuscript Review articles are typically between 5,000 and 12,000 words on initial submission. Review articles should present a clear research question, a balanced account, a clearly motivated selection of papers, consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of past research, important directions for future research, and some advance to the field. If AI agents were used to autonomously or semi-autonomously perform a research task, their use must be documented in the Methods section with the agent or tool, underlying model, and general logic and purpose described.
References References must follow American Psychological Association format. References must include a Crossref DOI formatted as a full URL.
Figures & Tables A maximum of 7 figures is permitted. For initial submission, figures may be pasted into the manuscript file.

Systematic Review

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract Abstract requirements are not specified.
Manuscript Systematic reviews are typically between 5,000 and 12,000 words on initial submission. Systematic reviews must provide an exhaustive summary of the current state of knowledge on the topic, with a clear research question, clearly motivated paper selection, a balanced account, discussion of strengths and weaknesses of past research, directions for future research, and some advance to the field. If an AI agent was used to autonomously or semi-autonomously perform a research task, its use must be documented in the Methods section with the tool or agent, underlying model, and the general logic and purpose of the agent.
References References must follow American Psychological Association format. References must include a Crossref DOI when available in the format https://doi.org/10.5334/joc.98.
Figures & Tables A maximum of 7 figures is permitted. For initial submission, figures may be pasted into the manuscript file. Supplemental materials are permitted but must be included with materials submitted for peer review.

Topical Review

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract Abstract requirements are not specified.
Manuscript Topical reviews are typically between 5,000 and 12,000 words on initial submission. Topical reviews must emphasize recent developments from the past 2 to 4 years, have a clear research question, offer a balanced account, consider strengths and weaknesses of past research, motivate the selection of papers, outline important directions for future research, and provide some advance to the field. If AI agents were used to autonomously or semi-autonomously perform a research task, their use must be documented in the Methods section with the tool, underlying model, and general logic and purpose of the agent.
References References must follow American Psychological Association format. References must include a Crossref DOI in URL format when available.
Figures & Tables A maximum of 7 figures is permitted. For initial submission, figures may be pasted into the manuscript file. Supplemental materials are permitted but must be included with materials submitted for peer review.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to publish?

Preregistered Research Reports use a two-stage process in which Stage 1 is reviewed before data collection and in-principle acceptance of Stage 1 guarantees publication of the Stage 2 manuscript if approved methods are followed.

Is a cover letter required?

A cover letter is required for Preregistered Research Reports. Stage 1 cover letters must confirm support, approvals, resources, repository plans, an anticipated timeline, data-sharing plans, and agreement about withdrawn preregistrations. Stage 2 cover letters must confirm that data were collected after in-principle acceptance and document required archival and manuscript details. For transfers, authors need to make a convincing case in the cover letter and response to reviews.
