Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must include the journal name, the paper title, the article’s principal findings and significance for epidemiology, and a statement that all authors approved the manuscript and it is not published or under consideration elsewhere.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured with the article-type-specific headings. Abstract headings must be Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 3500 words. Manuscript must include Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgement, and Data Availability sections. Manuscript must include 3 to 5 keywords after the abstract, mandatory highlights of 3 to 5 bullet points submitted in a separate editable file, and disclosures of AI tool use in Methods or Acknowledgements as applicable.
References Reference style must follow AMA Manual of Style, 11th Edition. References must be cited as consecutive superscript Arabic numerals and listed in the reference list in the order of first appearance in the text.
Figures & Tables Figures must be submitted as separate files, while tables may be placed on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. Tables must be submitted as editable text rather than images, figures and tables must be numbered with Arabic numerals and cited in consecutive order, and figure captions must appear in a separate Figure legends section.

What are the publication costs?

No submission fee. Publication fees are 70,000 JPY per article for Japan Epidemiological Association members and 180,000 JPY per article for non-members for papers of 7 published pages or less, plus 10,000 JPY per additional page beyond 7 pages. Letters to the Editor cost 10,000 JPY per page. Fees may be waived for eligible authors from low-income economies.
