Established in 1930, the Journal of Periodontology publishes original papers of the highest scientific quality to support practice, education, and research in periodontics and implant dentistry. As the original peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Periodontology, the primary mission is to publish cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical science in the fields of periodontology and implantology with content relevant to clinical practitioners, academicians, and researchers. We believe that evidence-based prevention and treatment could help populations achieve optimal oral and overall health.

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusion(s).
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 4000 words. Main body must be formatted as Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion. Manuscript must include a plain language summary as a single paragraph of no more than 200 words, up to seven keywords, and transparent disclosure of any use of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content tools in the Methods or Acknowledgements section.
References Reference list must not exceed 50 references. References must use AMA style.
Figures & Tables The total combined number of figures and tables must not exceed six. Figures must be supplied as separate files, while tables must be included in the main document file.

Review Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required for Review Articles. The cover letter must summarize the contributors’ work in the review field and address prior meta-analyses or systematic reviews on the topic, why a new one is needed, and whether the number of studies has changed since the last analysis.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Review Articles. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Review Articles have a 4,250-word limit, and the main body text excluding abstract, tables, figures, and references must not exceed 4,000 words. The main body text must include the sections Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions. The manuscript must include a plain language summary as a single paragraph of no more than 200 words, up to seven keywords, and transparent disclosure of any use of AI-generated content tools in the Methods or Acknowledgements section.
References AMA reference style is required.
Figures & Tables Review Articles may include up to 20 additional supplementary items, including figures, tables, and appendices. Tables must be included in the main document file, while figures must be supplied as separate files.

Is a cover letter required?

A cover letter is required for Review Articles and must include a short summary of the contributors' work in the review field, a PICO question, whether a prior meta-analysis or systematic review exists and when, why a new review is needed, and whether there has been a 20% increase in sample size since the last analysis. Clinical studies must also include in the cover letter the registration number and link to the study registration and an explicit statement of when the study was registered and when enrollment commenced.
