Article

Cover Letter A cover letter should be provided with the submission. Cover letter should include the corresponding author's affiliation and contact information, briefly explain the context and importance of the work and its suitability for the journal, and include confidential disclosures such as competing interests and related work in press or submitted elsewhere.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be no more than 150 words. Abstract must be unstructured with no subheadings.
Manuscript Manuscript should include an Introduction without subheadings, Results with subheadings, Discussion without subheadings and without separate limitations or conclusions sections, and Methods with subheadings, with all Methods described in the main manuscript file rather than the Supplementary Information. Manuscript must include a mandatory Data availability section, a Code availability section where applicable, an Author contributions statement identifying each author by initials, a Competing Interests statement, and documentation of any Large Language Model use in the Methods section or a suitable alternative section if no Methods section is present.
References References are limited to 60, though this limit is not strictly enforced. References must use standard Nature referencing style. References must be numbered sequentially in order of appearance, include all authors unless there are more than five in which case only the first author is listed followed by 'et al.', and include only one publication per reference number.
Figures & Tables Figures should generally be inserted within the text at appropriate positions for initial submission, while tables must be submitted at the end of the text document. Figure legends must not exceed 350 words per figure, and multi-panel figures must be presented on a single page with panels labeled a), b), c).

Review

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter should include the corresponding author's affiliation and contact information and briefly explain the context, importance, and journal fit of the work.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be no more than 70 words. Abstract must be unstructured with no subheadings.
Manuscript Main text is typically 3,000–4,000 words in length. Subheadings are permitted in the main text. Manuscript must include an author contributions statement naming each author by initials, a statement of responsibility specifying every author's contribution, and a competing interests statement declaring all financial and non-financial interests or none.
References References are limited to 60, though this limit is not strictly enforced. References must use Nature referencing style. References must be numbered sequentially as they appear and list all authors unless there are more than five, in which case the first author is followed by 'et al.'.
Figures & Tables At initial submission, figures should be incorporated into the main article file, while tables must be submitted at the end of the text document. Brief Communication

Manuscript Main text should be 1,000–1,500 words excluding the abstract, Methods, references, and figure legends. Methods descriptions must be included in the main manuscript file, and the Methods section should use subheadings. The manuscript must include Data availability, Author contributions, and Competing Interests sections, and a Code availability section where applicable.
References Brief Communications should include around 20 references as a guide. References must use Nature referencing style. References must be numbered sequentially in order of appearance, include all authors unless there are more than five in which case only the first author followed by 'et al.' is listed, and only one publication may be assigned to each reference number.
Figures & Tables At initial submission, figures should be incorporated into the main article file, while tables must be submitted at the end of the text document.
