The Ocular Surface is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal covering the ocular surface across ophthalmology, optometry, genetics, molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, infectious disease, and epidemiology. It publishes critical review articles on medical and surgical management of ocular surface pathology, ocular surface physiology, responses to injury and disease, drug and device development, as well as select original research reports and articles describing cutting-edge techniques and technology in the field.

Review Articles

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract A narrative abstract is required for Review Articles. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be narrative rather than structured.
Manuscript Review Articles are usually about 10–14 printed pages, equivalent to about 24–34 double-spaced manuscript pages including references, figures, and tables. Review Articles must use a topic-based outline with headings and subheadings labeled I, A, 1, a, (1), and (a). Review Articles must state the method of literature selection, including search words and databases used, the date of search, the number of articles retrieved, inclusion criteria, exclusion criteria, and a conflict-of-interest paragraph before the references, and the manuscript must also include a disclosure section plus an AI declaration statement above the references when AI or AI-assisted tools were used in writing.
References Review Articles should seldom exceed 150 references. References must be cited in the text as numbers in square brackets and listed in the order of appearance, with journal names abbreviated according to LTWA.
Figures & Tables Figures must be uploaded as separate files, while tables are submitted as editable text. Figures and tables must be cited in the text and numbered consecutively, and all tables and figures must include captions.

High Impact Original Research Reports

Abstract A structured abstract is required for High Impact Original Research Reports. Abstract must be fewer than 250 words. Abstract must be structured under the headings Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Abstract must use the headings Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript text must be 3,500 words or fewer, excluding the title page, legends, and references. Manuscript must include Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections, with the Introduction giving a brief rationale and objectives, the Results presented with minimal discussion, and the Discussion not reiterating results. Manuscript must include 1 to 7 keywords in English, a disclosure paragraph before the references stating any potential conflicts of interest or none, and an AI declaration statement immediately above the references if AI or AI-assisted tools were used in writing or research methods.
References References must be cited in the text using numbers in square brackets and listed in the reference list in the order of appearance.
Figures & Tables Figures must be supplied as separate files with the manuscript, while tables must be submitted as editable text. All tables and figures must be cited in numerical order, and tables must include captions with any notes placed below the table body.
