ALTEX – Alternatives to Animal Experimentation publishes open access academic articles on the development and implementation of alternatives to the use of animals for scientific purposes and informs on international developments in this field. ALTEX is the official organ of CAAT, CAAT-Europe, the Doerenkamp-Zbinden Chairs, EUSAAT and t4.

Research Article

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract A summary is required and a plain language summary is also required. The summary must be no more than 250 words and the plain language summary must be no more than 150 words.
Manuscript Research Articles must include an Introduction followed by (Animals), (human subjects), materials and methods, Results, and Discussion. The manuscript must include up to five keywords and the Introduction must state the article's relevance to the development and promotion of alternatives to the use of animals for scientific purposes.
References In-text citations must use author name and year of publication. References must be listed in alphabetic order by first author and include full DOIs or, if unavailable, other full content links.
Figures & Tables All figures, tables, and boxes must be placed appropriately within the text or at the end in the review PDF. Tables must be editable text rather than images, and each figure or table must have a number and a caption title.

How long does it take to publish?

Unedited versions of main articles and short communications are published as accepted manuscripts upon acceptance after receipt of final files and clarification of open issues; final versions are published in print and online in a journal issue.

A cover letter is encouraged rather than required. It should explain the manuscript type and scientific importance, note copyright issues, disclose preprint posting with link or DOI, indicate whether double-blind review is requested, and may suggest up to five potential reviewers who are not recent coauthors.

What are the publication costs?

ALTEX charges €2,500 per full manuscript and €1,300 per short communication upon acceptance for publication. Letters and meeting reports are charged €90 per printed page, and corners are charged €400 for authors who are not members of ALTEX Edition. Waivers may be considered if authors lack funds.
