Submission Instructions

Annals of Laboratory Medicine is an invitation-only journal. Submissions are accepted by invitation from the editorial board only. The following article types are accepted:

Original Article

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must include the paper title, a statement of its main point, a statement that none of the material has been published or is under consideration elsewhere, any preprint server and accession number or DOI if applicable, and the corresponding author’s complete address, telephone number, and e-mail address.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must be up to 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must be up to 3,500 words. Manuscript must use the sections Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion. Manuscript must include 3 to 10 MeSH-based keywords below the abstract, the authors’ contributions, conflict of interest and research funding declarations, acknowledgments if applicable, and a declaration describing any use of AI tools.
References Manuscript may include up to 40 references. References must use Vancouver style. References must follow the ICMJE sample reference format and the journal’s Endnote style for ALM.
Figures & Tables Manuscript may include up to 6 tables and figures in total. Figures or tables that exceed the article-type limit should be submitted for online publication only as supplemental files uploaded separately. Tables must be cited in ascending numeric order and figures must be numbered according to order of citation, with figure legends placed below the figures.

Review Article

Abstract Abstract is required. Abstract must be no more than 250 words. Abstract may be structured or unstructured.
Manuscript Manuscript must be up to 5,000 words. Manuscript must include 3 to 10 MeSH-based keywords below the abstract, declarations for conflict of interest and research funding, each author’s contributions, acknowledgments if applicable, and a clear declaration and description of any AI tool use with documentation in the manuscript including the Acknowledgements section.
References Manuscript may include up to 100 references. References must use Vancouver style.
Figures & Tables Manuscript may include up to 10 tables and figures in total. Figures or tables exceeding the submission-type limit or intended as supplemental material must be submitted separately as supplemental files.

Manuscript must include 3 to 10 MeSH-based keywords below the abstract and declarations for conflict of interest, research funding, acknowledgments if applicable, author contributions, and any relevant AI use.
