Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must list all author names, degrees, and affiliations; identify the single corresponding author; note any affiliation changes, meeting presentation details, and financial support.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Context, Objective, Design, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 50 double-spaced text pages. Manuscript must include a title page and a Materials and Methods section, and Original Articles must consist of original research. If artificial intelligence tools were used to create the manuscript, their use and the specific tools must be disclosed in the Materials and Methods section.
References References must not exceed 60. References must follow AMA style. References must be numbered in order of first mention, cited as superscript Arabic numerals, not alphabetized, and list up to 6 authors or editors before using the first 3 followed by "et al."
Figures & Tables Original Articles may include no more than 16 figures and 2 tables. Figures must be uploaded directly into the online submission system, and tables must be provided as separate pages in the manuscript file. Figures must be numbered in citation order and arranged into composite images when there are at least 4 figures, and tables must be numbered in citation order and include a descriptive title.

Review Articles

Abstract A structured abstract is required for Review Articles. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured under the headings Context, Objective, Data Sources, and Conclusions. Abstract headings must be Context, Objective, Data Sources, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 50 double-spaced text pages.
References Review Articles must include no more than 80 references. References must follow AMA style. References must be numbered in order of citation, cited as superscript Arabic numerals, not alphabetized, use Index Medicus journal abbreviations, and list up to 6 authors or editors before using the first 3 followed by "et al.".
Figures & Tables Review Articles must include no more than 16 figures and 2 tables. Figure files must be uploaded directly into the online submission system, and tables must be provided on separate pages.

Reports Of The Results Of Meta-Analyses

Cover Letter Cover letter is required. Cover letter must list all author names, academic degrees, and affiliations; specify the single corresponding author; note any post-study affiliation changes, meeting presentation details, and financial support for the research.
Abstract Abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Context, Objective, Data Sources, Study Selection, Data Extraction, and Conclusions.
Manuscript If artificial intelligence tools were used to create the manuscript, their use and the specific tools must be disclosed in the Materials and Methods section.
References References must follow AMA style. References must be numbered in order of mention, cited with superscript Arabic numerals, not alphabetized, use Index Medicus journal abbreviations, list up to 6 authors/editors or the first 3 followed by "et al." if more than 6, include the issue number after the volume, and provide a DOI for online publications when possible.
Figures & Tables For manuscripts containing at least 4 figures, the figures must be arranged into composite image(s). Figures must be uploaded directly into the online submission system, while tables and figure legends must appear on separate pages in the manuscript file. Figures and tables must be numbered in the order cited in the text, tables must include a descriptive title, and table abbreviations or acronyms must be defined in a footnote.

Abstract Abstract is not required for Letters To The Editor.
Manuscript Letters To The Editor must be limited to 500 words or fewer. Letters To The Editor must be prepared in the same manner as a manuscript. If artificial intelligence tools were used in creating the manuscript, their use and the specific tools must be disclosed in the Materials and Methods section.
References Letters To The Editor may include no more than 10 pertinent references. References must follow AMA style. References must be numbered in order of first mention using superscript Arabic numerals, not alphabetized, with journal names abbreviated according to Index Medicus and author lists showing up to 6 names or the first 3 followed by "et al." when there are more than 6.
Figures & Tables Figure files must be uploaded separately into the online submission system, and tables must appear on separate pages. Tables must be double-spaced, numbered in citation order, and given descriptive titles.
