Original Articles

Cover Letter Details of permissions obtained for any previously published material must be included in the cover letter.
Abstract Abstract is required for Original Articles. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured in four sections. Abstract headings must be Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions, with Methods including the study period and sample size and Results including the main results with estimates and confidence intervals.
Manuscript Main text must not exceed 3000 words, excluding the abstract, key messages, declarations, references, tables, figures, and supplementary material. Manuscript must include a short and specific title, 3 to 10 keywords at the end of the abstract, and a Key Messages section placed after the keywords and before the introduction. Manuscript must include a Key Messages section of 3 succinct bullet points each written as a single complete sentence, a conflict of interest statement, and an end-of-text declaration stating any use of AI tools and how they were used.
References References must not exceed 50. References must be formatted according to IJE style. References must be listed in numerical order, and when a reference has 4 or more authors only the first three should be listed followed by et al.
Figures & Tables A total of up to 8 tables and figures may be included. Tables and figures may be included in the main document at submission or uploaded separately, although tables should be presented in separate file(s) from the main text and each figure should be submitted separately from the text. Tables must be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and be editable, and table and figure titles should be in sentence case.

Cohort Profiles

Cover Letter Details of permissions obtained for any previously published material must be included in the cover letter.
Abstract Abstract is not required for Cohort Profiles.
Manuscript Main text must not exceed 2500 words, excluding key features, declarations, references, tables, figures, supplementary material, and the abstract. Title must be 'Cohort Profile: [the name of your cohort]', the article must use the journal’s required sub-headings, and the Key Features section must appear at the beginning of the article. Manuscript must include Key Features of up to 5 bullet points and 200 words total, an AI tools declaration with some detail that must not say 'None', and a section titled 'Can I get hold of the data?' identifying the contact author and providing contact details.
References Cohort Profiles should include around 30 references. References must follow IJE style. References must be listed in numerical order, and when a reference has 4 or more authors, the first 3 authors should be listed followed by et al.
Figures & Tables Cohort Profiles may include no more than 5 tables and figures in total. Tables and figures may be included in the main document at submission or uploaded separately, although tables should be presented in separate editable files and figures should be submitted separately from the text. Table and figure headings should be in sentence case.

Manuscript Letters To The Editor may be up to 700 words, or up to 500 words for a letter in response. Letters To The Editor should use a brief, descriptive title, and if referring to an article published in the journal the title should include some part of that article’s title. Author contributions and Conflict of interest statements are required for Letters To The Editor.
References Letters To The Editor may include up to 10 references. References should be formatted according to IJE style. References must be listed in numerical order, and when there are 4 or more authors the first three author names should be followed by et al.
Figures & Tables Letters To The Editor may include up to 2 tables and figures in total. The main document may contain all tables and figures at submission, or tables and figures may be uploaded separately. Any table or figure should illustrate the main findings only, and tables should be concise.
