Article

Cover Letter A cover letter must be submitted with the manuscript. The cover letter should include the corresponding author's affiliation and contact information, briefly explain the context and importance of the work and its suitability for the journal, and provide confidential information on conflicts of interest and related work in press or under consideration elsewhere.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract is typically 150 words. The abstract must be unreferenced.
Manuscript The main text, excluding the abstract, Methods, references, and figure legends, is typically no more than 4,000-4,500 words. The manuscript must include an Introduction followed by sections headed Methods, Results, Discussion, and Data Availability, with the Results and Methods sections divided by topical subheadings. Use of a Large Language Model must be documented in the Methods section or another suitable part of the manuscript if no Methods section is available.
References The manuscript has around 60 references. References must follow standard Nature referencing style. References must be numbered sequentially as they appear, only one publication may be given per reference number, and all authors should be listed unless there are more than five, in which case only the first author should be given followed by 'et al.'.
Figures & Tables The manuscript may include up to 10 display items consisting of figures and/or tables. For initial submission, figures should generally be inserted within the text at appropriate positions. Multi-part or panel figures must be prepared and arranged as a single image file rather than uploaded as separate panels.
